Impact as a Service: what it is and how it works

There is a moment in the history of every service when it stops being a project and becomes infrastructure. It happened to software with SaaS, to logistics with fulfilment, to computing with the cloud. It is now happening to corporate sustainability: it is called Impact as a Service, and it is the model on which Simbial is built.

What Impact as a Service is: a definition

Impact as a Service means obtaining environmental and social impact as a continuous, modular service, rather than as a one-off consulting project. A company no longer buys "a sustainability project" โ€” a document, an audit, a report that ends up in a drawer โ€” but subscribes to a capability: green talent teams working on its concrete challenges, scientific measurement of results, independent certification, and impact reports ready for management, clients and banks. Impact stops being an event and becomes a flow โ€” with a verifiable record that grows over time and stays with the company.

Why it emerges now: ESG, CSRD and supply chain pressure

The model emerges because sustainability requirements have become continuous. ESG questionnaires from lead clients come back every year, a little more demanding; banks integrate ESG scoring into credit decisions; international buyers require environmental standards in every tender; European reporting (CSRD and voluntary standards such as the VSME) is turning transparency from a choice into a market condition. At the same time, green skills โ€” energy management, ESG analysis, circular economy, carbon footprint measurement โ€” remain among the hardest to find: building everything in-house is not realistic for most SMEs. Serving this demand with spot projects no longer works: infrastructure is needed.

How it works in practice: green talent, measurement and certification

On Simbial, the model has a precise shape. Every business need โ€” reducing energy costs, responding to an ESG questionnaire, cutting waste on a production line, preparing the board report โ€” becomes a job with a measurable target defined before work begins. Makers, independent and multidisciplinary green talents selected and trained by the platform, create impact by working as a team with the company's own people: because some of the talent needed is often already working there, and the model trains them and puts them into play. Custodians, independent from the project by design, certify its data: they verify the indicators โ€” kWh saved, kilograms of COโ‚‚ avoided, water, materials, people trained โ€” and sign off. It is the separation between those who do and those who verify that makes the result defensible to anyone.

Impact as a Service vs traditional ESG consulting

The difference comes down to one word: proof. Traditional sustainability consulting sells days and delivers recommendations; Impact as a Service delivers results measured with a public methodology and versioned coefficients that anyone can check. The impact register stays with the company โ€” ready for the next client questionnaire, for the bank, for the sustainability report โ€” and grows with every project. The economic model is different too: a subscription-based activation plan, with individual Impact Challenges as one-off extensions. Like software: you pay for capacity, not slides.

For which companies โ€” and for which talents

The model is designed for companies under ESG pressure that want to turn requirements into value; for lead companies that need to bring their supply chain along; for partners โ€” industry associations, institutions, territorial bodies โ€” looking for a measurable way to bring the ecological transition into their networks. And it works the other way too: for professionals and young talents, Impact as a Service is a concrete path to the work of the future โ€” paid collaborations with companies, as independents or from within their own organisation, where every contribution builds a verifiable impact portfolio.

Impact is measured: the Simbial Impact Score

Everything converges in a single number, the Simbial Impact Score, calculated using the Net Positive Impact Score methodology: every indicator in real units, every data point traced to its event, every verification level declared โ€” from estimate to Custodian sign-off. And the number can always be opened up into the scientific data that compose it: that is the difference between saying "we are doing well" and being able to prove it. Impact is demonstrated, not declared โ€” even when it is being communicated.
